Electronics Recycling Principles

A Principled Approach

UNICOR follows a strict Electronics Recycling Statement of Principles:

  • Ensuring a safe, secure work and training environment for inmates and staff
  • Observing all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations at all levels
  • Ensuring factory processes and practices prevent pollution and protect worker safety
  • Ensuring all focus materials are managed properly on site
  • Conducting due diligence of downstream vendors’ handling of focus materials
  • Fostering continual improvement in all aspects of factory operations
  • Third-party certifications from qualified, independent experts (incl. RIOS and R3v3)
  • Processing incoming material on a hierarchy of responsible management strategies:
    • Reuse – unless a customer directs otherwise
    • Materials Recovery – for equipment and components not directed to reuse
    • Energy recovery – for secure destruction of some forms of data storage media
    • Landfill disposal for some non-electronic waste when reuse or recovery markets are unavailable
  • Ensuring that data security practices fully meet customers’ R2v3 requirements
  • Continual policy review – minimum of once per operating year
